Root Removal
Tree roots in drains are a common cause of blockages and can cause considerable damage to drainage systems in general. A plant’s growth towards the stimulus of water (in this case the water within the drainage system) is known as hydrotropism. One the roots have entered the drainage system the roots will thrive in this damp environment and over a period of time grow to the extent where they will cause blockages and / or the pipework to collapse.
If the root intrusion has caused the pipework to collapse then there is no alternative but to excavate, replace, backfill and reinstate. However, provided the line has not collapsed, the roots can be cut from the drains using flailing equipment powered by high pressure water as shown in the photograph below. Once the roots have been cut from the line, a structural liner can be inserted to prevent the roots from penetrating the line in the future.
